Plants need water—but they also need air around their roots. When water cannot escape, soil becomes saturated, oxygen is pushed out, and roots begin to rot. Good drainage holes allow excess water to leave the planter, keeping soil moist but not waterlogged. In short, drainage prevents one of the most common causes of plant failure: overwatering.

How Many Drainage Holes Do You Need?

There’s no single number that works for every planter, but there are some reliable guidelines:

  • Small planters (under 8 inches): 1–3 holes are usually sufficient.
  • Medium planters (8–16 inches): 3–6 evenly spaced holes work well.
  • Large planters (16 inches and up): 6–10 holes help ensure consistent drainage across the entire soil area.

The goal is even water escape, not just one wet spot. A single hole in a large planter can cause uneven moisture, leaving some roots too wet and others too dry.

What Size Should Drainage Holes Be?

The size of drainage holes matters just as much as the hole count.

  • Plastic: Holds moisture longer, so good drainage holes are essential.
